Abhishek weds Aishwarya …finally

Mumbai, April 20 (IANS) Colour, confusion and crowds… It was every bit the grand filmy wedding as Abhishek Bachchan, astride a horse, wearing an off-white sherwani and a white turban bedecked with flowers, arrived on a hot Friday evening to wed his Aishwarya Rai.

Bollywood’s power couple finally tied the knot in a grand ceremony that held much of the nation in thrall – never mind if the only details of the closely guarded event that filtered out were grainy zoom shots from TV cameras stationed across the road.

Aishwarya reached the Bachchans’ Juhu residence Prateeksha in a silver Mercedes decorated with flowers along with her mother and brother.

At almost the same time, the barat left the other Bachchan bungalow Jalsa nearby, with a visibly anxious Amitabh Bachchan, complete with a saffron turban, ushering his guests into the waiting Volvo buses that would take them to the wedding venue.

His face covered with a sehra of white flowers, Abhishek did a small jig before getting off the bus and waving cheerily and then getting on to his horse again at Prateeksha.

While photographers scrambled to train their cameras at the goings-on, curious stargazers climbed up trees, railings and even hoardings to get a first-hand view.

Amid the sea of saffron turbans sported by the baratis, several close friends like yesteryear actor Danny Denzongpa, industrialist Anil Ambani and director Goldie Behl could be seen.

The Bollywood celebrities who arrived to bless the couple also included Sonali Bendre, Preity Zinta, Karan Johar, Ajay Devgan and Kajol.

With so many high-profile guests, including Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav and Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh, at least 1,000 security personnel swarmed both the flower bedecked Bachchan homes. The road outside Prateeksha was blocked.

Friday’s wedding was the climax of three-day festivities that included a sangeet and a mehndi ceremony that were equally secretive.

The buzz around the Abhi-Ash marriage started last year and had been steadily getting louder even though the Bachchans never announced it officially because they wanted to keep it a private affair.

TV shots and newspaper pictures of guests, who kept floating in and out of their house from Wednesday, were the only proof that the big fat Indian wedding was finally taking place.

Both the Bachchan residences were turned into fortresses and for the uninvited, getting in was next to impossible.

The Bachchans not only took care of their own privacy, they were thoughtful enough not to disturb their neighbours – the lawns at the venue were covered with soundproofed, air-conditioned tents.

Members of the film fraternity who made it to the guest list showed cooperation towards the first family of Bollywood – none of the invitees breathed out a single detail about the wedding.

“They have invited all those people who are emotionally close to them,” Amar Singh said in an interview to a TV channel in an apparent explanation for some conspicuous absentees like neighbour Hrithik Roshan and all the Khans.

Fans and mediapersons who had logged on to Aishwarya’s official site also faced disappointment as they found it temporarily closed.

“This site is temporarily unavailable. Please do not call or e-mail but check back again next month. Thank you,” said a message apparently posted by Aishwarya.

Whether the wedding of the year was accessible to all or not, the couple’s many fans just hope that they live happily ever after…

The Telegraph India reported on February 26 that the venue of Aishwarya Abhishek wedding is Grand Hyatt, Mumbai. The guest list includes, Ambanis, Amar Singh and Bollywood fraternity. Neeta Lulla and Anna Singh are working on Aishwarya’s wedding trousseau, Sharbari Datta is doing Abhishek’s Kurtas and Shawls.

There is contradiction between the Observer’s report and The Telegraph’s fact check. It is also reported that the venue is actually Jaipur India Rajasthan and the date is 19th March but this news is not officially confirmed by either Bachchans or Rais.

We still haven’t got a date. The two of them are so busy, we haven’t been able to sit down and work it out. Amitabh told while talking to IANS. “Now Abhishek’s schedule for ‘Drona’ is postponed so I’m hoping we’ll be able to sit down and work out a date. But Aishwarya is in Karjat shooting and Jaya has gone off to parliament. Everyone is impatient. So are Aishwarya and Abhishek. Let’s see. I think far too much is being made of this affair. It’s just another wedding.”

During the recent Award marathons, we have seen that the Bachchan family has already whole heartedly accepted Aishwarya Rai as a part of their family. During the Stardust Awards when Aishwarya came on stage to recieve her award from her soon to be father in law Amitabh Bachchan, she took wrapped her Sari around the shoulder, like typical Indian daughter in law and touched Amitabh’s feet for blessings.

“The day Abhishek announced Aishwarya was the girl he was going to marry, she became a part of our family. I look on Aishwarya as a daughter” said Amitabh Bachchan while talking to IANS.

The Wedding of India’s top actor Abhishek Bachchan with former beauty queen and current top actress Aishwarya Rai took place at Bachchan’s family home according to the Hindu Rituals with the blessing of Hindu Gods, Hindu priests, Bride’s parents, Groom’s parents, Relatives and Friends. Only a select few like Ajay Devgan, Kajol, Sanjay Dutt, Preity Zinta, Suniel Shetty, Sonali Bendre from Bollywood were invited.

The event was a private one, although there were thousands of fans turned at the venue to Greet the Newly married couple.

The three day event which started on 18th of April 2007 with the Sangeet night.It was really a Bollywood traditional one with both the Rais and Bachchans as well as their relatives and friends putting up dance performances. As for the highlight of the Sangeet night a dance performance was put up by both Ash-Abhi and another dance performance was done by Amitabh Bachchan -Jaya Bachchan. The day was a memorable one for those participated with the Bride and Bridegroom. All the guest were treated with Mumbai’s best Cuisine.

The 19th of April 2007 was Mehendi day, which was held at Aishwarya Rai’s home.
As for the Indian tradition, mehendi or henna is given to the bride by the groom’s family to apply in ways of beautiful tattoos on her hands and feet. This ceremony is used to take place at the bride’s residence before the wedding. The Mehendi ceremony at Aishwarya Rai’s residence was a private one with only close relatives from the bride’s family. Abhishek’s sister Shweta, actress Sonali and some members of the Bachchan family arrived in a bus for the Mehendi ceremony in the evening. The mehendi was specially brought from Sojat which is in Rajasthan. The ceremony nearly lasted for 3 hours. Aishwarya wore a red and gold sari specially designed by Nita Lulla.

The wedding day was 20th April 2007. On that day of the wedding, the baraat left from “Jalsa” to move towards the venue of the wedding, “Prateeksha” at 4 pm. Jalsa and Prateeksha both are Bachchan’s Bungalows. The guests were taken by the special bus. On the way Abhishek Bachchan got off from the bus and climbed on a beautifully decorated white horse. Abhishek Bachchan was wearing a clear white outfit filled with beautiful hand work. His face was covered with the traditional style of flowers. Abhishek was weaving hand to the bystanders on the way to Prateeksha with traditional wedding band and dancers. Abhi’s sister Shweta was also seen gyrating with the baraatis while father Amitabh Bachchan was supervising the entire event.

The baraatis reached the venue and the mahurat for the wedding which was 5.30 pm on the auspicious day of Akshaya Tritiya, which is a best day to have Hindu Weddings. The wedding ceremony began behind the close doors With high security measures both in and around the house. There were more than 400 security personal on duty. Heavy traffic was experienced as the baraat was en route; fans were running and pushing for a glimpse of stars. Media people with line of cameras too were capturing all the possible actions.
